Description
This is an authentic German โWestwall Medalโ (Deutsches Schutzwall-Ehrenzeichen) from the Second World War. The medal was instituted on 2 August 1939 and awarded to military personnel, engineers, and laborers who took part in the construction, fortification, or defense of the Westwall (Siegfried Line) โ Germanyโs massive defensive line along its western border. The obverse of the medal features a German eagle clutching a swastika, positioned above a crossed sword and shovel, symbolizing the unity of soldiers and workers in building the fortifications. The reverse bears the inscription โFรผr Arbeit zum Schutze Deutschlandsโ (โFor Work in the Defence of Germanyโ), surrounded by a laurel wreath.
This example retains a warm bronze tone and excellent detail, with crisp relief throughout. Early awards like this were typically made from quality bronze metal, later replaced by zinc as the war progressed. The Westwall Medal remains a popular and historically significant award among collectors of WWII German militaria.
