Description
An original German WWII Feldpost postcard, postmarked March 17, 1942, featuring a beautiful black-and-white photographic view of Lake Faak (Faaker See) in Carinthia, Austria, with a rowing boat on the water and mountains in the background.
The photograph is titled “Abendstimmung am Faakersee (Kärnten)”, meaning “Evening Atmosphere at Lake Faak (Carinthia).” The postcard was sent through the German military postal system during World War II and features original Feldpost markings, including a distinctive purple military eagle stamp with swastika.
A Personal Message from Wartime
The reverse contains a handwritten message in striking blue ink, addressed to Degel Josef in Salzburg, Austria. The writer expresses appreciation for receiving a message from the recipient and mentions that things are going well. The correspondence also includes questions about recent experiences and mutual acquaintances.
Although the message does not describe military operations, it offers a personal glimpse into everyday communication during the Second World War.
Historical Significance
The German Feldpost system allowed military personnel to exchange correspondence with family members and friends throughout the war. This postcard combines an attractive Austrian landscape photograph with original wartime handwriting and military postal markings, making it an interesting piece of WWII postal history. The card was published by Verlag Theodor Sterin in Villach in 1941, and its original photographic image captures the scenery of the Austrian Alps during the wartime period.
The vivid blue handwriting and contrasting purple military stamp give this particular example a distinctive appearance. An authentic piece of WWII postal history, ideal for collectors of German Feldpost, wartime correspondence and historical photographic postcards. Also suitable as a historical backdrop for displaying medals, badges, dog tags and other WWII relics.
