Description
An original German WWII Feldpost postcard, postmarked December 12, 1942, featuring a beautiful black-and-white photographic view of Hohe Penhab (2,115 m) in the Austrian Alps, near Saalbach. The postcard was sent from Saalbach, Austria, to Frau Tani Hommel in Dresden, Germany, during World War II. It features original wartime postal markings, including a distinctive German military eagle stamp with swastika.
A Personal Message from Wartime
The reverse contains a handwritten message signed “Papa” (Dad), addressed to family members and acquaintances, including Tani, Margit and Traudel. The writer describes a Sunday mountain excursion in the Austrian Alps, mentioning the beautiful scenery and snowy conditions. He also refers to a stop in Nuremberg during his return journey. Rather than discussing military operations, the message captures an ordinary moment during wartime: a father sharing his experiences and keeping in touch with loved ones.
Historical Significance
The German Feldpost system played an important role in maintaining communication between military personnel and their families during World War II. This postcard combines an attractive alpine photograph with personal handwritten correspondence and original wartime postal markings. The military eagle stamp and references to everyday activities in December 1942 make it an interesting piece of German wartime postal history.
An authentic piece of WWII postal history, ideal for collectors of German Feldpost, wartime correspondence and historical photographic postcards. Also suitable as a historical backdrop for displaying medals, badges, dog tags and other WWII relics.
