Description
An original German military Feldpost postcard from World War II, written on February 19, 1942, and postmarked February 24, 1942.
The postcard was sent by a German soldier identified as Gefreiter Goldfuß to Johann Goldfuß, preserving a personal exchange between a serviceman and his family during the Second World War. The card features an original German military Feldpost cancellation with the characteristic eagle and swastika emblem, as well as the Feldpost number 44562.
A Personal Message from a German Soldier
In his handwritten message, the soldier mentions that he has not received any letters for some time and wonders why he has not heard from home. He also describes being very busy and asks about family members and acquaintances. The correspondence includes references to his personal circumstances, the weather and what appears to be a financial matter involving Reichsmarks. These everyday concerns offer an interesting glimpse into the personal lives of German soldiers, whose communication with their families depended heavily on the military postal system.
Wartime Propaganda
Another interesting feature of this postcard is its printed German propaganda quotation:
“Was die Front opfert, das kann überhaupt durch nichts vergolten werden. Aber auch das, was die Heimat opfert, muß vor der Geschichte dereinst bestehen können.”
Translation:
“What the front sacrifices can never truly be repaid. But what the home front sacrifices must also be able to stand the judgment of history.”
The quotation illustrates how wartime propaganda emphasized sacrifice and responsibility, both among soldiers serving at the front and civilians remaining at home.
Together with the handwritten message, this makes the postcard an interesting historical document combining personal correspondence and official wartime messaging. An interesting addition to any WWII militaria collection, particularly for collectors of German Feldpost, personal soldier correspondence and wartime propaganda.
