Description
This is an authentic German “Winterschlacht im Osten 1941/42” medal, commonly known as the Eastern Front Medal (Ostmedaille). It was awarded to Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS personnel who fought on the Eastern Front during the harsh winter campaign of 1941–1942, one of the most brutal periods of the Second World War. The medal features the Wehrmacht eagle clutching a swastika underneath a Stahlhelm (steel helmet) and a stick hand grenade. On the other side a crossed sword and branch of oak leaves can be obversed, symbolizing the struggle and endurance of the German forces. This side is also inscribed with “Winterschlacht im Osten 1941/42”.
Originally nicknamed the “Frozen Meat Medal” by soldiers, this decoration was given to those who endured extreme cold and combat conditions in Russia. It remains one of the most iconic campaign medals of the Third Reich. This example retains great detail and original patina, preserving the historical character of the piece. A genuine and evocative relic of the Eastern Front.
