Description
This is an original WWII German WHW (Winterhilfswerk) donation badge featuring a flag motif on the front and marked “Infanterie” on the reverse. It is part of the series ‘Die Siegreichen Fahnen und Standarten der Deutschen Wehrmacht’ (The Victorious Flags and Standards of the German Armed Forces). A pin fitting is attached to the rear.
The WHW, or Winterhilfswerk (Winter Relief Organization), was a Nazi-era charitable initiative organized by the National Socialist People’s Welfare (NSV). It aimed to provide support for impoverished Germans during the colder months through public donations and fundraising campaigns. Donors were often given small tokens of appreciation—such as badges, pins, or other collectibles—commemorating different themes, regions, or cultural motifs. These items have since become collectible artifacts reflecting the propaganda and social efforts of the Third Reich. Members of the Hitler Youth (Hitlerjugend) and the League of German Girls (Bund Deutscher Mädel) often went door to door to solicit donations, reinforcing the regime’s emphasis on duty, community service, and ideological commitment among young people. These small collectibles came in countless designs, often representing cultural, military, or symbolic themes.
This particular example is notable for its reverse marking, referencing the Infanterie, one of the main combat units of the Wehrmacht. An interesting and uncommon addition for collectors of WHW tinnies or WWII German militaria.
