Description
An original German military Feldpost postcard from July 1940, accompanied by an original wartime newspaper clipping announcing the award of the Iron Cross 2nd Class (Eisernes Kreuz II. Klasse) to a German Army officer.
The postcard was written on July 17, 1940, and postmarked July 21, 1940, shortly after Germany’s military campaign in Western Europe. It was sent by an officer identified as Oberleutnant Rüdiger, with the recipient addressed as Anny v. Seidl in Innsbruck, Austria.
What makes this particular piece especially interesting is the accompanying original German newspaper clipping, which mentions an Oberleutnant and battalion adjutant named Rüdiger receiving the Iron Cross 2nd Class.
An Officer Decorated with the Iron Cross
The Iron Cross 2nd Class (EK2) was a German military decoration awarded for bravery and military merit during World War II.
The accompanying newspaper clipping reports that Oberleutnant Rüdiger, serving as a battalion adjutant in an infantry regiment, had received this decoration. The matching name and rank provide an interesting connection between the personal correspondence and the wartime newspaper announcement.
Together, these two original documents offer a fascinating glimpse into the life of a German officer during the early stages of World War II.
Historical Background – July 1940
The postcard dates from an important period in the war. Germany had recently completed its campaigns in the Netherlands, Belgium and France, with the French armistice taking effect in June 1940. During this period, numerous German soldiers and officers received military decorations for their service in the Western Campaign. The postcard preserves personal correspondence from this period, while the accompanying newspaper clipping documents the public announcement of a military award.
An interesting historical set for collectors of German military correspondence, Wehrmacht officers, Iron Cross decorations and original WWII documents. The combination of personal Feldpost correspondence and an original newspaper announcement makes this a particularly appealing addition to a WWII militaria collection.
