MDWW2BATTLEGROUNDS EXCLUSIVE
This iconic German dog tag (Erkennungsmarke) was worn around the neck by every Wehrmacht soldier. Although the Reichsarbeitsdienst (RAD) was not part of the Wehrmacht, it acted as a precursor to Wehrmacht service for many men. Its activities emphasized discipline, physical fitness, and ideological indoctrination, effectively preparing participants for future military service. The RAD men, like Wehrmacht soldiers, were issued a dog tag. These ones are made from zinc and are stamped with “RAD”, but no specific camp code or soldier registration number can be seen. This means it was ready to be issued at a RAD camp, but it was discarded before it was issued to a specific soldier. Maybe it was dumped at the end of the war. A beautiful rare piece for every WW2 relic collection!
During World War II, RAD members performed auxiliary roles that supported the Wehrmacht, such as:
- Constructing military fortifications (e.g., the Atlantic Wall).
- Building airfields, roads, and supply depots.
- Clearing rubble in cities and repairing infrastructure after Allied bombing raids.
- Occasionally, serving as combat auxiliaries, though this was not their primary role.
